Right now, we are on a full Health Risk Lockdown.
Masks must be worn at all times.
If K vomits while in w/c placed her head in a recovery position turned to the left and down. While doing so, suction mouth/nose of vomit/mucus. Continue to do so until all fluid is out of mouth/nose.
If K vomits while laying down put in recovery position- lay on side and suction mouth until all fluid is gone.
K will immediately be placed in the red zone for 5 days.
· Predisone twice daily for 5 days
· Vest treatment 4 times a day for 5 days.
· Cough assist 4-6 times per day
· Pulmicort 3-4 times daily
· Tobramycin twices daily for 2 weeks
· Albuterol, ipratropium bromide, saline as needed
Aspiration is defined as the inhalation of food, fluid, saliva, medication, or other foreign material into the trachea and lungs. Any material can be aspirated on the way to the stomach or as stomach contents are refluxed back into the throat. The following information will help identify risk factors and interventions that may be unique to persons with developmental disabilities.
· Inadequately trained caregivers assisting with eating/drinking.
· Weak or absent coughing/gagging reflexes, commonly seen in individuals with cerebral palsy, non-productive (weak) cough, and poor gag reflex.
· Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which can cause aspiration of stomach contents.
· Medication side effects that cause d
· Inadequately trained caregivers assisting with eating/drinking.
· Weak or absent coughing/gagging reflexes, commonly seen in individuals with cerebral palsy, non-productive (weak) cough, and poor gag reflex.
· Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which can cause aspiration of stomach contents.
· Medication side effects that cause dry mouth, drowsiness, and/or relax muscles causing delayed swallowing and suppression of gag and cough reflexes.
· Impaired motor skills that may leave individuals unable to sit upright while eating (especially spasticity of the muscles which affect the head, neck and trunk).
· Seizure disorder they may occur during oral intake or failure to position a person on their side after a seizure, allowing oral secretions to enter the airway.
· Is nonverbal
· A diagnosis of oral/pharyngeal dysphagia, aspiration or past episodes of aspiration
· A diagnosis of a cognitive disorder
· A diagnosis of neurogenic dysphagia ( cerebral palsy, seizure disorder)
· GERD
· History of aspiration pneumonia
· Needing to be fed by others
· History of coughing, choking, gagging while eating
· Eating/swallow
· A diagnosis of oral/pharyngeal dysphagia, aspiration or past episodes of aspiration
· A diagnosis of a cognitive disorder
· A diagnosis of neurogenic dysphagia ( cerebral palsy, seizure disorder)
· GERD
· History of aspiration pneumonia
· Needing to be fed by others
· History of coughing, choking, gagging while eating
· Eating/swallowing evaluation that indicates dysphagia
· Has unexplained weight loss, chronic dehydration, and/or constipation
· Takes medication that may decrease voluntary muscle coordination, causing drowsiness/sedation, dry mouth (or excessive salivation)
· Has chronic URI’s (chest congestion, frequent pneumonia, moist respirations/wet, gurgly vocal quality, persistent cough, or chronically uses cough/asthma medications).
· Gagging/choking during meals
· Persistent coughing during or after swallowing, Also, coughing several minutes after eating.
· Irregular breathing, turning blue, moist respirations, wheezing or rapid respirations.
· Intermittent fevers
· Chronic dehydration commonly associated with dysphagia
· Vomiting, regurgitation, rumination (vomiti
· Gagging/choking during meals
· Persistent coughing during or after swallowing, Also, coughing several minutes after eating.
